MIKANG HOSTS OPENING FIXTURE OF 2026 PLATEAU STATE GOVERNOR’S CUP AS MIKANG AND LANGTANG SOUTH PLAY GOALLESS DRAW
Mikang Local Government Area on Sunday set the stage for the 2026 Plateau State Governor’s Cup as Mikang and Langtang South LGA settled for a goalless draw in an entertaining opening fixture at GSS Tunkus, the Mikang Local Government Council Headquarters.
The opening match marked the commencement of this year’s 2026 Governor's cup to be competed by all the 17 LGA's on the Plateau, which attracted football enthusiasts, government officials, and supporters who gathered to witness the kick-off of the prestigious state tournament.
The tournament was officially declared open by the Executive Chairman of Mikang Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Benard Soepding Alkali, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and Member Representing Mikang Constituency, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil.
Also in attendance was the Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Prince Miaphen, alongside the Executive Chairmen of Jos South and Kanke Local Government Councils, as well as the Chairman, Plateau State Football Association, Hon. Dr. Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande and his board members.
The opening encounter was keenly contested, with both Mikang LGA and Langtang South LGA displaying determination, energy and attacking intent. Despite creating opportunities and mounting pressure at different stages of the game, neither side could break the deadlock, with the match eventually ending 0–0.
Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Chairman of Mikang Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Benard Soepding Alkali, welcomed the participating teams, match officials and football fans to Mikang LGA. He also expressed appreciation to the Plateau State Football Association (PFA) for choosing Mikang as the venue for the opening match of the 2026 Plateau State Governor's Cup.
The Chairman described sports as an important platform for youth development, talent discovery, community integration and peaceful coexistence. He noted that competitions such as the Governor’s Cup provide young people with an opportunity to display their abilities, gain valuable experience and build positive relationships across communities.
Mikang LGA Chairman urged all participating teams to uphold discipline, fair play and respect throughout the tournament, stressing that the essence of the competition goes beyond winning trophies to identifying, developing and nurturing emerging football talents.
Dr. Benard also commended the Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for supporting initiatives aimed at promoting youth development and providing opportunities for young people to engage meaningfully in sports.
He further appreciated the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, the Plateau State Football Association, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, fellow Local Government Chairmen, match officials, players, supporters and other stakeholders for their presence and support towards the successful commencement of the 2026 Plateau State Governor’s Cup in Mikang.
Other group matches will continue across three centres, all in Jos South LGA; Bukuru mini stadium, Rantya Football field, and the Ladura-Du Football field.
