THE INFUSION OF PLATEAU CULTURE INTO SPORTS: PRINCE MIAPHEN’S VISION OF UNITY, IDENTITY AND SPORTING RENAISSANCE

Culture is the identity of a people, the language they speak, the traditions they preserve, the values they uphold and the heritage they proudly pass from one generation to another. Sport, on the other hand, is a powerful social force capable of bringing people together across ethnic, religious, political and social boundaries.

On the Plateau, these two powerful instruments are increasingly finding common ground, with football providing the platform and culture supplying the identity.

The emerging initiative of infusing Plateau’s rich cultural heritage into sporting activities, particularly during home matches of Plateau United Football Club, represents more than entertainment. It is a deliberate effort to use sport as a vehicle for unity, cultural pride, youth engagement and the projection of the Plateau identity to the wider world

This innovative approach, championed by the Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Prince Miaphen, is gradually creating a new atmosphere around football in the State, where supporters do not merely come to watch football, but also experience the rich cultural diversity that makes Plateau unique.

Since assuming office as Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Prince Miaphen has continued to demonstrate that sports can serve purposes beyond the football pitch.

Football is a universal language. It brings people together, creates shared experiences and gives young people a sense of belonging. When combined with culture, it becomes an even more powerful instrument for promoting identity, peace and unity.

The decision to showcase different Plateau cultural groups during Plateau United's home matches is therefore significant. It sends a powerful message that every culture, every community and group has a place in the Plateau project.

The Jos Zaria Road Stadium is gradually becoming more than a venue for ninety minutes of football. It is increasingly becoming a stage where Plateau's cultural heritage, sporting passion and collective identity converge.

The home encounter between Plateau United and the renowned Oluwoye Warriors, Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan, provided a compelling example of this emerging fusion of culture and football.

Before the commencement of the match, the anaguta traditional dancers from Jos North took centre stage, displaying the richness of Plateau cultural heritage and reminding spectators of the diverse traditions that constitute the Plateau identity.

Yes, the cultural performance was not merely ceremonial. It created an atmosphere of excitement, pride and collective anticipation among the supporters.

At halftime, the cultural display continued, helping to sustain the energy in the stadium and boost the morale of both the players and supporters.

The reward came on the pitch as Plateau United produced a commanding 3–1 victory over Shooting Stars FC, turning the home fixture into a celebration of football, culture and Plateau pride.

The cultural journey continued during Plateau United's subsequent home fixture against newly promoted Inter Lagos FC, where the rich cultural heritage of the Goemai people was proudly showcased at the stadium.

The colourful performance further demonstrated the diversity of Plateau's cultural landscape and the importance of giving every community the opportunity to tell our story through sport.

The sight of traditional dancers performing before football supporters was a powerful reminder that football can provide a platform not only for sporting excellence but also for cultural preservation and promotion.

It is a concept that deserves sustained attention because young people who see their culture celebrated in major public spaces are more likely to appreciate, preserve and promote that heritage.

The Goemai cultural display at the Jos Zaria Road Stadium coincided with another important moment in Plateau United's campaign, as the club strengthened its position among the leading contenders on the Nigerian Premier Football League table.

The atmosphere generated by the supporters, coupled with the cultural activities surrounding the fixture, contributed to an electrifying match-day experience.

Football thrives on atmosphere. Players need the confidence that comes from knowing that the entire community is behind them, while supporters need a sense of belonging and ownership of the club. That is where initiatives of this nature become important.

Special commendation must also go to the Executive Chairman of Shendam Local Government Area, Hon. Nicholas Kemi Nshe, popularly known as “The Bulldozer,” for his demonstrated passion for sports and his support for Plateau United supporters.

His sponsorship of fans to attend the match free of charge was a commendable gesture that helped increase the number of Plateau people in the stadium and created an even more vibrant atmosphere for the team.

Football requires administrators, government, supporters, and corporate bodies  working together.

When supporters are given the opportunity to attend matches, they become the additional “twelfth player” whose voice, energy and encouragement can make the home ground intimidating for visiting teams.

Credit must equally be given to a committed Plateau son, and result-oriented football administrator, Hon. Dr. Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association, for his contribution to creating an enabling environment for football development in the State.

The Plateau State Football Association remains a critical component of the football ecosystem, and continued collaboration between the association, the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, Plateau United and other stakeholders is essential to sustaining the momentum.

The broader sporting renaissance on the Plateau must also be viewed within the context of the deliberate commitment of the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to revitalising sports and creating opportunities for young people.

Sports is one of the areas where government investment can produce multiple benefits. Beyond competition and entertainment, sports can provide employment, discover talents, promote discipline, strengthen social cohesion and keep young people positively engaged.

The administration's continued attention to sports development therefore provides an important policy environment for initiatives such as the integration of culture into football.

Against this backdrop, the appointment of Prince Miaphen as Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development reflects an administration seeking to inject fresh ideas, creativity and renewed energy into the sporting sector.

The emerging marriage between football and Plateau culture is one example of how sports administration can go beyond the traditional boundaries of competitions and trophies.

The sporting calendar on the Plateau is set for another major engagement as the 2026 Governor's Cup is scheduled to kick off on 4 October 2026.

The competition provides another opportunity to take the message of grassroots football, youth development, unity and cultural pride to communities across the State.

If properly harnessed, competitions such as the Governor's Cup can serve as talent-discovery platforms while strengthening the connection between communities and the sporting sector, while prizes are given to past winners as at when due.

The ultimate objective should be to build a sporting culture in which every young Plateau citizen can see a pathway, from the community football pitch to professional football, from the local stadium to national and international competition, and from sporting participation to meaningful opportunities for personal development.

The infusion of Plateau culture into football is therefore more than dancers performing at halftime. It is a statement about who we are.

It is a declaration that Plateau's diversity is a strength, not a weakness; that our different cultures can stand together under one sporting banner; and that football can become a meeting point for communities.

From the Anaguta cultural display to the Goemai performance, from the passionate supporters in the stands to the players battling on the pitch, a new narrative is gradually emerging.

It is a narrative of culture, football, unity, youth empowerment and Plateau pride.

With the deliberate commitment of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the creative leadership of Commissioner Prince Miaphen, the administrative support of the Plateau State Football Association under Hon. Dr. Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, the intervention of community-focused leaders such as Hon. Nicholas Kemi Nshe, and the unwavering support of Plateau United fans, the State's sporting story is entering a new chapter.
