‎GOVERNOR MUTFWANG RECEIVES FORMER ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, JUSTIN WELBY

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, had on Monday, September 21, 2026, received the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Justin Welby, on a courtesy visit at the Old Government House, Rayfield, Jos, where they exchanged views on peace, interfaith relations, humanitarian support and the welfare of communities.

‎Bishop Welby, who retired as Archbishop of Canterbury on January 6, 2025, expressed his continued affection for Nigeria, recalling his longstanding relationship with the country and noting that he had visited the region more than a dozen times since his first visit in 1978.
‎
‎Welcoming the former Archbishop, Governor Mutfwang appreciated his enduring commitment to peace, reconciliation and humanitarian causes, noting the important role of faith leaders in encouraging unity and compassion across communities.
‎
‎The Governor stressed that the true value of faith is reflected in service to humanity, particularly through care and support for people in need.
‎“Religion, like the Bible says, is not mere talk, it is what you do for the less privileged and what you do for common humanity that shows really the value you place on God,” Governor Mutfwang stated.
‎
‎Governor Mutfwang also shared with Bishop Welby some of the administration's ongoing efforts to support communities affected by difficult circumstances, including the recent commencement of a ₦1.5 billion joint intervention by the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Bola Tinubu and the State Government intervention to empower victims of violent attacks and support their recovery, facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes while rebuilding livelihoods and strengthening community confidence.

‎In his response, Bishop Welby reflected on the responsibilities associated with public leadership, drawing from his experience during the coronation of King Charles III. He recalled the moment he anointed the King with oil as one that left a deep impression on him about the responsibilities carried by those entrusted with leadership.

‎“The impression I had then was of the weight of government, how enormously heavy it is to be in politics, to lead a state, to lead a local government authority, to lead a nation,” Welby said.»
‎
‎He encouraged continued attention to peacebuilding, compassion and the protection of vulnerable people, drawing from experiences encountered during his international peace missions.
