GOVERNOR MUTFWANG PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR PROPOSED LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, CALLS FOR SUSTAINABLE UNITY IN ADAMAWA

…says education, healthcare remain critical tools for national development

The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Esq., has pledged his support for the proposed Lutheran University Nigeria (LUN), Demsa, Adamawa State, describing the institution as a significant investment in education, human capital development and the future of Nigeria.

Governor Mutfwang made the commitment on Friday, September 4, 2026, while speaking at the dedication of the Library and Administrative Complex of the proposed Lutheran University Nigeria in Demsa. 

The event was held as part of activities commemorating the 70th birthday of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, CFR.

The Governor commended the Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for what he described as exemplary leadership, particularly his commitment to unity, equity, fairness and justice. He urged the people of Adamawa State to continue to rally around the Governor, stressing that unity remained indispensable to achieving sustainable development and collective prosperity.

According to Governor Mutfwang, “Divisions never bring profit; divisions never bring value. It is when we are united together that we can accomplish the dreams for which our forefathers fought and for which we are continuing to fight.”
The Governor also congratulated the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), describing the proposed university as another significant milestone in the church’s longstanding contribution to education and national development. 

He noted that the initiative was part of a growing tradition within the TEKAN family of churches of establishing universities and other institutions that expand access to quality education and contribute to the development of human capacity.

He recalled the historic contributions of Christian missionaries to the development of education and healthcare in Nigeria, stressing that these interventions had played a critical role in shaping generations of Nigerians and producing leaders across religious, ethnic and geographical divides. 

Governor Mutfwang said he was a beneficiary of missionary education at Gindiri in Plateau State, which, according to him, provided a solid foundation for many Nigerians who went on to make significant contributions to the development of the country.

The Governor expressed confidence that the proposed Lutheran University would similarly create opportunities for Nigerians from diverse religious, ethnic and social backgrounds to acquire quality education and develop the skills required to contribute meaningfully to national development. 

He emphasised that education remained indispensable to national progress and renewed his call for deliberate and comprehensive efforts to reform the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria, in order to provide children with sustainable access to education, skills and opportunities.

Governor Mutfwang urged the leadership of the church and other stakeholders to continue to work towards sustainable unity, observing that many divisions in society were often driven more by personal interests, ego and narrow considerations than by genuine differences in values or principles. He maintained that setting aside such differences would enable leaders and citizens to build bridges, strengthen relationships and advance common developmental objectives.

Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, welcomed Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang on behalf of the government and people of Adamawa State and the Church, commending his enduring love and friendship for the people of Adamawa State. 

He noted that despite the short notice, Governor Mutfwang honoured the invitation, describing his presence as a demonstration of his commitment, dedication and passion for education and human capital development.

Governor Fintiri prayed that the Lutheran University, when completed, would produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also morally grounded, intellectually sound and equipped with the character and leadership capacity required to move Nigeria forward. 

He also praised the resilience, vision and determination of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, for choosing to invest in education and human development rather than personal comfort.

The celebrant, Boss Mustapha, said his investment in education was, in part, a tribute to the memory and legacy of his late father, who was a Headmaster and had a deep passion for education. 

He explained that his father believed strongly in the transformative power of education and invested substantially in developing bright minds for the advancement of society. He said the establishment of the institution was therefore inspired by a desire to contribute to the development of future generations and strengthen the educational foundation of the country.

In the entourage of Governor Mutfwang were Rev. Dr. Obed Dashan, a prominent Nigerian clergyman and former Vice President of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN); the Rt. Revd. Stanley David Fube, a prominent Nigerian cleric and Anglican Bishop of Langtang; Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Go'ar, former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and former Member of the House of Representatives; Air Vice Marshal Sen. Napolong Bali; Sir Joseph Ari, former Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF); Arc. Maurice Mutfwang, as well as Dame Pauline Tallen, who attended the occasion on a personal invitation.

Governor Mutfwang prayed for the successful completion and take-off of the Lutheran University Nigeria, expressing the hope that the institution would become a centre of academic excellence, moral formation, innovation and human capital development, producing generations of leaders who would contribute significantly to the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.
