With profound admiration and gratitude to Almighty God, the Government and people of Plateau State join His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, family members, friends, political associates, and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating an extraordinary leader, revered father, distinguished elder statesman, accomplished soldier, visionary leader, and one of the most influential political figures in Plateau State and the Middle Belt, His Excellency, Da Senator Jonah David Jang, CON, on the joyous occasion of his 80th Birthday and the unveiling of his autobiography, "Airman to Politics: My Life."
This milestone is far more than the celebration of a remarkable age; it is a celebration of an extraordinary life devoted to sacrifice, patriotism, courageous leadership, and unwavering service to humanity. It is an opportunity to reflect on a legacy that has shaped the political, social, and developmental landscape of Plateau State, the Middle Belt, and Nigeria.
For decades, Senator Jang—fondly known as Dara—has remained one of the defining figures in the political evolution of Plateau State. His life is a testament to discipline, resilience, integrity, courage, and an abiding faith in God that has guided him through military service, democratic governance, and national leadership.
Before emerging as one of Nigeria's foremost democratic leaders, Dara distinguished himself in the Nigerian Air Force, where he served with exceptional professionalism, discipline, and patriotism. His exemplary military career earned him appointments as Military Governor of Benue State and subsequently Military Governor of the then Gongola State, now Adamawa and Taraba States.
In these capacities, he demonstrated remarkable administrative competence, fairness, firmness, and a deep commitment to responsible governance—qualities that would later define his civilian leadership.
Beyond this, Senator Jonah David Jang occupies a respected place in Nigeria's democratic history. During the struggle against military rule, he aligned himself with the ideals championed by the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other pro-democracy advocates who tirelessly campaigned for the restoration of democratic governance, constitutional rule, and civil liberties.
With Nigeria's return to democratic rule, Senator Jang became one of the leading voices of Plateau politics and a respected advocate for the Middle Belt. His election as Governor of Plateau State in 2007 ushered in a period of purposeful governance focused on restoring public confidence, strengthening institutions, promoting peace, and accelerating development.
One of the enduring hallmarks of his administration was its massive investment in infrastructure. Roads were constructed and rehabilitated across the three senatorial districts, connecting communities, stimulating commerce, improving access to essential services, and expanding economic opportunities for citizens.
His administration also prioritised education by expanding and renovating schools, upgrading learning facilities, and strengthening tertiary institutions across the State. These investments reflected his conviction that education remains the greatest instrument for empowering future generations and building a prosperous society.
In the health sector, Senator Jang's administration improved healthcare infrastructure and expanded access to quality medical services, while implementing reforms that enhanced service delivery. His government equally strengthened the civil service, prioritised workers' welfare, and promoted institutional stability that enhanced governance across the State.
Perhaps even more significant was his unwavering commitment to peacebuilding. During periods of social and communal tensions, Dara consistently demonstrated calm, courage, and statesmanship by promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusive engagement. His efforts contributed significantly to rebuilding trust among communities and laying a stronger foundation for peaceful coexistence.
Beyond the high offices he has occupied, Senator Jang remains a father figure, mentor, and source of inspiration to countless leaders across generations. His wisdom, political foresight, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice continue to influence those privileged to benefit from his guidance. To many, he represents a generation of selfless leaders whose courage and clarity of purpose helped define the trajectory of Plateau State.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has enjoyed a warm and enduring relationship with Dara, founded on mutual respect, trust, and a shared vision for the progress of Plateau State. Over the years, Senator Jang's fatherly counsel, encouragement, and steadfast support have remained invaluable, inspiring a leadership philosophy anchored on integrity, compassion, justice, and service.
In 2023, Senator Jonah David Jang publicly adopted Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang as his political son and wholeheartedly supported his aspiration to serve as Governor of Plateau State. His influence, guidance, and enduring connection with the people played a significant role in Governor Mutfwang's emergence. Since then, their relationship has continued to flourish as a remarkable father-and-son bond built on shared values, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to the peace, unity, and development of Plateau State.
Today, although changing political realities have placed them in different political parties, Governor Mutfwang continues to affirm that nothing can diminish the respect, affection, and goodwill he holds for his political father. Their relationship remains a shining example that genuine partnerships founded on character, shared values, and commitment to the common good will always transcend partisan boundaries.
At 80, Senator Jonah David Jang remains one of the towering personalities in the history of Plateau State. His courage, conviction, patriotism, and unwavering devotion to public service continue to inspire hope and provide valuable guidance as Plateau journeys towards a future of lasting peace, unity, and shared prosperity.
As distinguished personalities from across Nigeria gather in Jos to celebrate this remarkable milestone and witness the unveiling of the inspiring story of his life's journey, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang gives thanks to Almighty God for preserving Dara's life, granting him good health, and allowing him to witness the enduring impact of his decades of dedicated service to humanity.
On behalf of his family, the Government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang prays that Almighty God will continue to bless Senator Jonah David Jang with many more years of sound health, abundant grace, divine wisdom, and renewed strength, so that he may continue to offer his invaluable counsel to present and future generations.
Happy 80th Birthday, Dara.
