PLATEAU STATE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK 2026 OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

The Government of Plateau State has successfully launched the Plateau State Waste Management Framework, marking a significant milestone in the State’s deliberate efforts to build a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Plateau State.

The event brought together key stakeholders from government, the 17 Local Government Areas, traditional and religious institutions, communities, development partners, private sector actors, waste pickers, civil society organizations, and the media.

The Framework provides a strategic direction for transforming waste management through integrated waste management systems, formalization of waste pickers, circular economy adoption, Public-Private Partnerships, promotion of the recycling industry, and community participation and behavioural change.
A major focus of the Framework is the deliberate promotion of the recycling industry as an opportunity for resource recovery, job creation, entrepreneurship, investment, innovation, and sustainable economic development. The vision is to move from seeing waste simply as something to be discarded to recognizing it as a valuable resource that can drive economic opportunities while protecting our environment.

The successful launch reflects the commitment of  the Plateau State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, Executive Governor of Plateau State, to reposition waste management and advance environmental sustainability across the State.

We sincerely appreciate His Excellency for his continued support and commitment to environmental governance and for honouring this important occasion through the Secretary to the Government , who represented him at the launch.

We also extend our profound appreciation to the Country Director of Tearfund for her presence and continued commitment to supporting sustainable waste management initiatives in Plateau State. We are grateful to Tearfund for its invaluable partnership, technical support, and contribution to the development of this important Framework.

A CLIMAX OF PARTNERSHIP AND ACTION
A major highlight and climax of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Plateau State Government and  Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA).

The signing represents a significant step from policy to action, strengthening collaboration in the waste management and recycling value chain and demonstrating the State’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sustainable investment, innovation, resource recovery, and private sector participation.

The partnership further reinforces the principle that government cannot achieve sustainable waste management alone. Through strategic partnerships with development partners, private sector actors, communities, and other stakeholders, we can build a waste management system that delivers environmental, social, and economic benefits.

The launch of the Framework and the signing of the MoU therefore mark not an end, but the beginning of a new phase of implementation, partnership, investment, and measurable action.
