HON. SILAS AWARD FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO COLLEGE OF HEALTH TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS, ZAWAN
In a landmark move to address the critical shortage of healthcare manpower in rural communities, the Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, has awarded full tuition scholarships to indigenous students of the Plateau State College of Health Technology, Zawan.
The beneficiaries, all in their ND1 and HND1 programs, will have their education fully funded until graduation, the Chairman announced during a ceremony held at the council Secretariat, on Wednesday.
Hon. Silas, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the ALGON in Plateau State, explained that this gesture is because of the importance his administration places on the health sector and the critical shortage of requisite manpower in the communities. He said the first batch of students who are indigenous to Jos South LGA will have their tuition covered till they graduate from the college.
The Chairman noted that the scholarship program is part of a deliberate policy to rebuild the local government's primary healthcare system from the ground up, adding that as a matter of policy, the local government will shoulder the responsibility of training those who, to a very large extent, will be serving the responsibility of manning primary health facilities across the local government.
He further explained that as a unique component of the program, beneficiaries are required to gain practical experience at local Primary Health Centres (PHCs) during their semester breaks. With these primary healthcare facilities spread across the local government where the students are located and resident, he believes that as part of developing themselves, once they are semester-free, they should walk into any of these PHCs to assist. In that process, they will be developing themselves because they will be practically doing what they are doing in school.
The Chairman noted that this is not the first time his administration has invested in education. The council has given education assistance to PhD students and master's students in the local government and even provided JAMB registration support.
The idea, he said, is not to continue to build bridges or install infrastructure alone, even though they are needed in the course of day to day life, but after building this infrastructure, the question of who uses them arises. For the administration, human capital development is key, and that is what they have done with the beneficiaries.
The event drew prominent figures, including the Executive Chairman of Mikang LGA, Dr. Bernard Alkali, who praised his counterpart's visionary leadership.
He said if someone is elected with the passion of working for the people, they will be restless until the people get satisfied, and that is exactly what is happening with the Jos South Chairman. He expressed confidence that posterity will judge the Chairman kindly for this gesture.
The Leader of the Jos South Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Chomoshen Emmanuel, expressed gratitude for the Chairman's focus on healthcare. He specifically thanked the chairman for choosing the College of Health Technology to award the scholarship and for helping his people in the health sector, not just by words, but in actions.
The Provost of the College of Health Technology, represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr Pam Gyang Moses, offered prayers for the success of the initiative and the Chairman's future endeavors, thanking God for giving him the wisdom to start this and praying that whatever he aspires for in the future will be granted.
With this investment, Jos South LGA aims to build a sustainable healthcare workforce that will serve its communities for generations to come, setting a precedent for local government-led human capital development in Plateau State and beyond.
