GOVERNOR MUTFWANG PROCURES FERTILIZERS FOR 2026 FARMING SEASON, APPROVES SUBSIDY TO BOOST FARMERS' PROFIT MARGINS
The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has approved the procurement of fertilizers for the 2026 farming season as part of his administration's unwavering commitment to agricultural transformation, food security, and the economic empowerment of farmers across the state.
To ensure that farmers have timely access to quality farming inputs at affordable prices, Governor Mutfwang has further approved a substantial subsidy on the fertilizers, making a 50kg bag available at the cost of ₦20,000, from the prevailing market price of between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000. The subsidy takes immediate effect to enable farmers access the inputs without delay as the planting season gathers momentum.
Governor Mutfwang disclosed that the Plateau State Government has procured approximately 500 truckloads of fertilizer for distribution to farmers across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state. The intervention is designed to reduce the high cost of agricultural production, enhance farmers' productivity, and strengthen food security throughout Plateau State.
According to the Governor, agriculture remains a major pillar of his administration's development agenda and a critical driver of economic growth, employment, and rural development. He explained that the fertilizer subsidy is a direct response to the concerns consistently raised by farmers over the rising cost of farming inputs and reflects the government's determination to make agriculture more productive, profitable, and sustainable.
Governor Mutfwang noted that the intervention aligns with the broader agricultural development objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda and complements ongoing efforts to cushion the effects of economic hardship while increasing food production across the country.
While the official flag-off of the 2026 Fertilizer Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2026, the Governor has directed that the sale of the subsidized fertilizers commence immediately to ensure farmers take full advantage of the current planting season.
The Governor expressed confidence that the initiative will significantly reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers' profit margins, and contribute meaningfully to the state's drive towards achieving food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development.
Governor Mutfwang therefore calls on farmers across Plateau State to take full advantage of the subsidy programme, and assures them of his administration's continued commitment to implementing policies and programmes that support agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods, and position Plateau State as Nigeria's leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness.
