GOVERNOR MUTFWANG MEETS MANUFACTURERS, BUSINESS LEADERS, MSMEs; REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO INDUSTRIALISATION IN PLATEAU STATE

....pledged to build a resilient and sustainable economy 

The Plateau State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient, private sector-driven economy, with manufacturing positioned as a major catalyst for industrial growth, job creation, economic diversification, and sustainable prosperity.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang stated this during an interactive breakfast meeting with manufacturers, investors, business leaders, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) held at the Government House, Jos.

The strategic engagement, which brought together captains of industry, regulatory agencies, entrepreneurs, and key stakeholders in the organised private sector, followed recent discussions between the Governor and the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole. It forms part of the administration's deliberate efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and the private sector in driving industrial development across Plateau State.

Addressing participants, Governor Mutfwang commended investors for maintaining confidence in Plateau State despite past economic and security challenges. He assured them that his administration is deliberately creating an enabling environment where businesses can flourish through improved infrastructure, security, policy reforms, and strategic partnerships.

"It takes courage to invest in an environment where the operating climate has not always been favourable. Our commitment is to build a resilient and sustainable economy that is no longer dependent on federal allocations. The private sector remains the engine that will drive Plateau's economic transformation," the Governor said.

Governor Mutfwang identified agribusiness as the cornerstone of the state's industrialisation agenda, noting that strategic investments in potatoes, livestock, coffee, acha, horticulture, and other agricultural value chains would provide the raw materials required to stimulate manufacturing while creating employment and expanding export opportunities.

"We are not merely investing in agriculture; we are unlocking complete value chains. Feedlots, dairy production, cold-chain facilities, processing, transportation, packaging, and exports all represent significant investment opportunities. As incomes rise, purchasing power increases, businesses expand, and the economy grows," he added.

The Governor reiterated his administration's determination to unlock the vast economic potential of agriculture, manufacturing, mining, tourism, and other productive sectors in order to diversify Plateau's economy beyond dependence on federal allocations.

He highlighted several transformative initiatives already underway, including the establishment of West Africa's largest Potato Tissue Culture Laboratory for quality seed multiplication, the rehabilitation of tractor fleets, construction of an ultra-modern abattoir, dairy development programmes, and strategic partnerships aimed at positioning Plateau as Nigeria's leading agricultural processing and export hub.

Governor Mutfwang further outlined ongoing investments in road infrastructure, electricity, digital connectivity, tourism, and hospitality, stressing that these interventions are designed to reduce the cost of doing business, improve competitiveness, and attract both local and foreign investments.

"We are building an economy that is resilient, sustainable, and driven by the private sector. Government does not have all the answers, and we remain open to constructive dialogue and partnerships that will position Plateau as the economic powerhouse of Northern Nigeria," he stated.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Mohammed Nyalum, described the engagement as a strategic platform for sustained dialogue between government and industry.

He expressed confidence that stronger collaboration with the organised private sector would accelerate industrialisation, attract greater investment, stimulate innovation, and generate employment across the state.

"This breakfast meeting is a deliberate platform for continuous engagement with manufacturers on the Plateau. Such dialogue remains essential for industrial growth, innovation, investment, and employment generation," the Commissioner noted.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Gombe, and Nasarawa Branch, Mr. Ajibola Kayode-Ojo, commended Governor Mutfwang for initiating direct engagement with manufacturers and business owners.

He described manufacturing as the backbone of industrial growth, innovation, and wealth creation, noting that regular interaction between government and the organised private sector would strengthen investor confidence and unlock the state's enormous economic potential.

Kayode-Ojo called for the harmonisation of taxes and levies to eliminate multiple taxation and reduce regulatory bottlenecks affecting industrial productivity. He also urged the government to sustain investments in roads, electricity, telecommunications, and security, encourage greater patronage of locally manufactured products, and institutionalise periodic engagements with manufacturers.

The MAN Chairman invited Governor Mutfwang to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed permanent secretariat of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria in the state.

The Governor later toured exhibition stands showcasing a diverse range of products—including food items, beverages, cosmetics, household products, and other goods—manufactured and processed by indigenous companies in Plateau State.

The exhibition underscored the growing capacity of local industries and reinforced the administration's commitment to supporting indigenous manufacturers, promoting local content, strengthening MSMEs, and creating an enabling business environment that will accelerate industrialisation, expand employment opportunities, and drive sustainable economic development in Plateau State.
