GOVERNOR MUTFWANG FLAGS OFF DISTRIBUTION OF 500 TRUCKLOADS OF SUBSIDISED FERTILISER FOR THE 2026 FARMING SEASON, STRENGTHENS FOOD SECURITY AND AGRICULTURAL PROSPERITY
The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, on Friday officially flagged off the distribution of 500 truckloads of subsidised fertiliser for the 2026 farming season in Jos South Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration's unwavering commitment to strengthening agricultural production, enhancing food security, and improving the livelihoods of farmers across the state.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Mutfwang described agriculture as the backbone of Plateau State's economy and urged citizens not to be discouraged by prevailing security challenges.
"The fact that we are going to farm is part of our testimony of resilience," the Governor declared, assuring farmers that no force would prevent Plateau State from sustaining its position as the food basket of the nation through increased agricultural production and value addition.
He disclosed that the state had already commenced the distribution of improved potato seedlings and would continue to provide essential farm inputs to guarantee bumper harvests and improved productivity across the state.
Governor Mutfwang explained that the Plateau State Government, in partnership with the 17 Local Government Councils, jointly procured the fertilisers as a strategic investment in agricultural development. He noted that government approved a subsidised price of ₦20,000 per bag, compared to the prevailing market price, to ensure that genuine farmers have affordable access to the essential input.
According to him, the intervention reflects his administration's commitment to returning the dividends of governance directly to the people through programmes that improve productivity, stimulate economic growth and enhance household incomes.
The Governor further revealed that the initiative was also designed to cushion the impact of the losses suffered by farmers following the decline in food prices last year. He announced that arrangements had been concluded for government to purchase harvested produce from farmers, thereby protecting them from exploitation by middlemen, guaranteeing a ready market for their produce and ensuring better returns on their investments.
Governor Mutfwang also encouraged community farming and greater collaboration among residents, stressing that collective action would not only improve agricultural productivity but also strengthen community security and resilience.
He assured farmers that fertiliser and other agricultural inputs would be made available consistently during both the rainy and dry farming seasons to sustain year-round food production.
According to him, sustained access to quality agricultural inputs will boost food production, create employment opportunities across the agricultural value chain, strengthen agro-processing industries and restore prosperity to farming communities throughout Plateau State.
In his address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Samson Bugama, commended Governor Mutfwang for approving the procurement of 500 truckloads of assorted fertilisers for the 2026 farming season—more than double the quantity distributed in previous years—as part of deliberate efforts to boost agricultural productivity and guarantee food security across the state.
He disclosed that fertiliser distribution had already commenced through 18 designated distribution centres across Plateau State using a technology-driven system designed to ensure transparency, accountability and traceability.
According to the Commissioner, beneficiaries receive SMS notifications indicating when and where to collect their fertiliser, while the digital system enables the Ministry to monitor every bag from the warehouse to the final beneficiary.
"His Excellency approved the development of a robust tracking system so that we can account for every bag of fertiliser distributed. We know where each bag goes and who receives it. Our goal is to ensure that every bag reaches genuine farmers and is applied on the farm," he stated.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government Area, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, expressed appreciation to Governor Mutfwang for selecting Jos South to host the statewide flag-off ceremony. He commended the Governor's unwavering commitment to agricultural development and expressed confidence that the 2026 farming season would record unprecedented success for farmers and further strengthen Plateau State's economy.
Stakeholders at the event described the fertiliser distribution programme as another bold demonstration of the Mutfwang administration's commitment to agricultural transformation, expressing optimism that the initiative would significantly increase food production, create jobs, improve rural livelihoods and reinforce Plateau State's strategic position as Nigeria's leading food-producing state.
