‎‎GOVERNOR MUTFWANG COMMENDS TINUBU'S INFRASTRUCTURE AGENDA AS BABBAN LAMBA–SHARAM ROAD PROJECT SIGNALS NEW ERA OF DEVELOPMENT FOR PLATEAU‎‎Plateau State Governor , Barr. Caleb Mutfwang has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for extending the Federal Government's Renewed Hope infrastructure programme to Plateau State, describing the flag-off of the Babban Lamba–Sharam (Phase II) Road Rehabilitation Project in Kanke Local Government Area as a transformative investment that will stimulate economic growth, improve security, enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen regional integration.‎‎The Governor made the remarks during the official flag-off ceremony of the Sharam–Garram–Babban Lamba Road (Phase II), on Thursday July 2, 2026.‎Describing the project as the fulfilment of a long-awaited aspiration, Governor Mutfwang noted that the road, first initiated about eight years ago, had appeared destined for abandonment before the intervention of the Tinubu administration.‎‎"This road is not just a road; it is an opening of opportunity. It is an opportunity for networking and a transit route to greater possibilities," the Governor said, adding that the project would unlock economic potential, improve mobility, facilitate commerce and create new opportunities for communities across Plateau State.‎‎He commended President Tinubu for demonstrating genuine commitment to the development of Plateau and the Middle Belt, stressing that no administration since Nigeria's return to democratic rule had invested in federal infrastructure across the state on the current scale.‎‎"Mr. President, sometimes you may hear Plateau people say that since the advent of democracy, no President has remembered Plateau in terms of infrastructure. Now that you have begun this good work, we thank you and pray that this momentum will continue," he said.‎‎Governor Mutfwang used the occasion to make a passionate appeal for the reconstruction of the strategic Mararaban Jama'a–Barkin Ladi–Mangu–Pankshin–Kanke–Langtang–Shendam–Ibi federal highway. He described the route as the backbone of Plateau's economic and social life, linking the Northern, Central and Southern Senatorial Zones before extending into Taraba State.‎‎According to him, "rehabilitating the ageing corridorconstructed in 1971, would revive commerce, improve access to agricultural markets and reconnect communities across the North-Central and North-East regions."‎‎The Governor emotionally observed that completing the road would bring joy to generations of Plateau leaders and national statesmen, including Yakubu Gowon, the late Solomon Lar, former Governor Simon Bako Lalong and elder statesman Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, while restoring hope to communities stretching from Berom land through Mangu, Pankshin, Kanke, Langtang and Shendam.‎‎"I therefore appeal that this request be conveyed to Mr. President and to the Honourable Minister of Works. We believe that when approval is granted, Plateau has a dependable partner in the Ministry of Works," he added.‎‎Governor Mutfwang further highlighted the significance of the project coming barely a day after the flag-off of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe Super Highway, saying both projects demonstrate an unprecedented level of collaboration between the Federal Government and Plateau State.‎‎He urged Plateau citizens to remain united, support agricultural production and sustain peaceful coexistence, assuring them that stronger cooperation with the Federal Government would continue to attract more developmental projects. He also disclosed that additional fertiliser supplies were on the way to support farmers during the current planting season.‎‎Representing President Tinubu, APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, described the ongoing nationwide infrastructure drive as unprecedented, noting that the Federal Government is executing over one thousand road projects across Nigeria.‎‎He praised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for championing what he described as one of the most ambitious road development programmes in the country's history.‎‎According to the President the Babban Lamba–Sharam Road occupies a strategic position within Nigeria's national transport network because it connects Plateau to Bauchi, the North-East, South-East and South-South economic corridors.‎‎"This is not merely a road project; it is a project that will connect businesses, families, farmlands and communities. It will reduce travel distance by over one hundred kilometres and create new opportunities for trade and prosperity," he stated.‎‎He disclosed that the Tinubu administration currently has 61 federal road projects spread across the North-Central geopolitical zone, including completed, ongoing and emergency intervention projects, in addition to legacy highway programmes such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Trans-Saharan Super Highway and the Badagry-Sokoto Super Highway, stressing that the Sharam corridor would feature modern security infrastructure, including surveillance cameras, street lighting, police stations and a control centre to enhance security monitoring across Kanke, Pankshin, Langtang and adjoining communities.‎‎The President called on the contractor, Desicon Engineering Nigeria Limited, to accelerate project delivery, he urged the company to prioritise the employment and training of local youths and artisans so that host communities would benefit directly from the economic opportunities created by the project.‎‎In his remarks, Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Infrastructural development across Plateau State, praising the construction of concrete roads and the Federal Government's prompt response to critical infrastructure challenges. Meanwhile Representing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, APC National Chairman Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the Minister of Works and the people of Plateau for supporting the state's ongoing transformation through strategic collaboration. He conveyed the Speaker's commendation of the President's development agenda, stating that Plateau people were proud of the progress already being recorded. Stressing the importance of partnership between the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government, Gagdi affirmed, "With genuine and sincere, honest collaboration between you and the Governor, Plateau State will be something else."‎‎Earlier, the project contractor, Desicon Engineering Nigeria Limited explained that the Phase II contract covers approximately 40 kilometres of roadway, including a two-kilometre extension to Kanke Local Government Headquarters. The road will be constructed using continuously reinforced concrete pavement technology, a durable engineering innovation expected to reduce maintenance costs while extending the lifespan of the highway.‎‎The contractor described the project as a critical economic corridor that will strengthen regional trade, improve transportation efficiency and support national economic integration under the Renewed Hope Agenda.‎‎Beyond the flag-off, the project positions Plateau as a major beneficiary of Nigeria's  ongoing road infrastructure  while boosting public confidence in government efforts to expand connectivity, improve security and unlock sustainable economic opportunities across the state.‎‎The event attracted senior federal and state government officials, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers and community leaders.‎‎‎Gyang Bere, PhD‎Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Executive Governor of Plateau State‎July 2, 2026‎
