GOVERNOR MUTFWANG CALLS FOR TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS AS PLATEAU HOSTS NIGERIA COMPUTER SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Plateau State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has urged technology professionals, policymakers, researchers, innovators, and industry leaders to move beyond dialogue and develop practical digital solutions capable of accelerating economic growth, reducing poverty, and transforming critical sectors of Nigeria's economy.

Governor Mutfwang made the call on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, while declaring open the 20th Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) International Conference on Technology and Computing in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Addressing participants drawn from across Nigeria and beyond, the Governor described Plateau State as a microcosm of the nation and reaffirmed its reputation as the Home of Peace and Tourism, noting that the state's rich cultural diversity, hospitality, peaceful environment, and enormous investment potential make it an ideal destination for innovation and enterprise.

"If you haven't visited Plateau, then you haven't visited Nigeria because Plateau is the microcosm of our nation. This is home to every Nigerian—a place where everyone can live, work, invest, and prosper," the Governor stated.

Governor Mutfwang said his administration has deliberately positioned digital technology at the centre of governance and economic transformation. He explained that technology has enhanced internally generated revenue, strengthened payroll administration through biometric verification, improved transparency, and increased efficiency in public service delivery.

He further disclosed that the Plateau State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has established a state-of-the-art Makerspace at Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi, to nurture young innovators and equip them with the tools required to develop home-grown solutions to contemporary developmental challenges.

"Our goal is to lift our people out of poverty by leveraging technology to stimulate economic growth, improve productivity, and create sustainable opportunities for our citizens," he said.

The Governor stressed that digital innovation must be deployed to revolutionise agriculture, enhance food security, improve livestock production, modernise healthcare, strengthen education, and expand economic opportunities across all sectors.

He observed that Nigeria's agricultural productivity remains significantly below global standards, citing potato and milk production as examples where technological innovation, research, and smart agricultural practices can dramatically increase yields and improve competitiveness.

Governor Mutfwang urged participants to ensure that the conference produces practical, implementable outcomes capable of positioning Nigeria as not merely a consumer of digital technologies but also a global producer of cutting-edge hardware and software solutions.

"My expectation is that this conference will not merely be another talk shop but a solution-driven platform that generates practical innovations. The time has come for Nigeria to develop its own hardware, build globally competitive software, and create technologies that will drive our economic renaissance," he emphasised.

Expressing optimism about Plateau State's future, the Governor declared that the state is strategically positioned to become Nigeria's next major economic frontier outside Lagos, owing to its abundant natural resources, youthful population, peaceful environment, and commitment to innovation-driven development.

He encouraged participants to become ambassadors of Plateau State by sharing their positive experiences and helping to project the state's immense opportunities to the rest of the country and the international community.

Earlier, Chairman of the Conference Committee, Bayo Mohamed Animode, said the decision to host the conference in Jos was deliberate, describing Plateau as a strategic location that symbolises national unity, regional development, and technological advancement.

Speaking on the conference theme, "Harnessing Digital Innovation and Emerging Technologies for Inclusive Growth and Economic Renaissance (RISE 2026)," Animode said the conference was designed to move beyond annual deliberations by developing practical blueprints for industrial collaboration, digital transformation, and inclusive economic development.

He disclosed that the conference features fourteen keynote presentations, technical sessions, innovation exhibitions, startup engagements, policy dialogues, and capacity-building programmes aimed at translating ideas into practical solutions that will accelerate Nigeria's digital transformation.

Also speaking, President of the Nigeria Computer Society, Prof. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu, described digital innovation as the cornerstone of Nigeria's future competitiveness, noting that emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, cybersecurity, robotics, and quantum computing—are fundamentally reshaping global economies, governance, and the future of work.

According to him, the conference provides a strategic platform for government, academia, industry, development partners, and innovators to forge practical collaborations that will bridge Nigeria's digital divide, stimulate innovation, create quality jobs, improve public service delivery, and accelerate sustainable economic growth.

Prof. Aliyu commended Governor Mutfwang for his visionary commitment to digital transformation and expressed appreciation to the Plateau State Government for hosting the international conference.

 He expressed confidence that the deliberations would produce actionable strategies capable of advancing Nigeria's digital economy and strengthening the country's position as a leading technology hub in Africa.
