WE WILL INVEST IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT THROUGH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT — GOVERNOR MUTFWANG
...Declares Open Plateau State Science, Technology and Innovation Festival
The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to harnessing and developing the immense potential of Plateau youths through strategic investments in science, technology, and innovation.
The Governor disclosed that arrangements have been concluded for the deployment of skilled and talented Plateau youths into global job outsourcing opportunities, noting that the necessary framework has already been put in place, with hundreds of youths going through the screening.
Governor Mutfwang made this known while declaring open the Plateau State Science, Technology and Innovation Festival (PLASSTIFEST), themed "Re-imagining Plateau: Driving Innovation and Technology for a Smarter and Sustainable Future," held at the Crispan Hotel and Events Centre, Jos.
He recalled that his administration had officially declared 2025 as the "Year of Technology Advancement" in Plateau State, aimed at promoting innovation and encouraging young people to leverage technology in solving societal challenges and creating sustainable livelihoods.
The Governor expressed delight at the ingenuity and resilience of Plateau youths who, despite limited opportunities, continue to deploy their talents and skills to address critical challenges while creating value for society.
Governor Mutfwang further revealed that the state government has deliberately taken steps to support indigenous innovation by empowering a young inventor from Bokkos Local Government Area who designed and built a prototype vehicle but lacked the financial resources to expand his work.
According to the Governor, the young innovator has been awarded a contract to produce 200 hand tillers as part of the government's efforts to transition agriculture from traditional manual practices to mechanized farming.
"This young man from Bokkos has demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovation. We have engaged him to produce 200 hand tillers, which we are going to test them on our farms this year. What a hand tiller can accomplish in one hour may take an entire community of farmers several days to achieve. This is the kind of innovation that will attract young people to agriculture and transform productivity," Governor Mutfwang stated.
He emphasized that supporting innovation-driven solutions remains central to his administration's vision for economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development. According to him, empowering young innovators will not only address local challenges but also position Plateau State as a hub for technological advancement and entrepreneurship.
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Rochukwu Udeh, SAN, commended the Plateau State Government for organizing the innovation festival and urged that the initiative be sustained to identify and nurture talented young Nigerians capable of developing practical solutions to national challenges through research and innovation.
Dr. Udeh noted that science, technology, and innovation remain critical drivers of economic diversification, industrialization, and job creation in Nigeria. He explained that the Federal Government is actively expanding the nation's digital economy and supporting local research and development initiatives to achieve sustainable growth.
The Minister further disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has set an ambitious target of growing Nigeria's economy to $1 trillion by 2030 through value addition, industrialization, and innovation-driven development. According to him, the Renewed Hope Agenda provides a robust framework for achieving this objective by strengthening the country's technological and industrial capabilities.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), as well as the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Prof. Ayo Omotayo, alongside other dignitaries, delivered goodwill messages during the event.
A major highlight of the festival was the demonstration of a robot designed and constructed by Plateau youths to assist in addressing everyday challenges and showcase the growing technological capacity of young innovators in the state.
Earlier, Governor Mutfwang received the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology and a delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) on a courtesy visit at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
