PLATEAU MOVES TO TACKLE WATER SCARCITY IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
The Plateau State Government has initiated high-level stakeholder engagement to address persistent water scarcity in Langtang South Local Government Area and other parts of the state.
The meeting, convened at the instance of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, brought together key players in the water sector to brainstorm immediate and sustainable solutions to the crisis.
Chief of Staff to Governor Caleb Mutfwang ,Jeremiah Satmak, who chaired the session on behalf of the governor, said the engagement was aimed at identifying appropriate interventions and developing strategies to improve access to potable water in the affected areas.
Satmak disclosed that a committee would be set up from among the stakeholders to review the situation and submit actionable recommendations to the state government within one week.
He directed the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, to facilitate the constitution of the committee.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Bashir Datti, explained that the meeting was meant to critically examine the water crisis, with particular attention on Langtang South.
He highlighted ongoing interventions under the SURWASH and AFD programmes, noting that these initiatives have helped ease water challenges in some local government areas.
Datti stressed the importance of collaboration with key sector players to enable the ministry and its agencies deliver safe, adequate, and sustainable water supply across the state.
Chairman of Langtang South Local Government Area, Hon. Nanfa Alhassan, commended the state government for its swift response.
He described the situation as critical, saying it has led to several health challenges and requires urgent intervention.
