GOVERNOR MUTFWANG PLEDGES STRONG BACKING FOR NPC TO DELIVER A TRUSTED NATIONAL CENSUS
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s firm commitment to supporting the National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure the successful conduct of a credible, transparent, and data-driven national population and housing census.
Governor Mutfwang gave the assurance on Friday, February 13, 2026, while receiving the leadership of the Commission on a courtesy visit at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
Describing the NPC as a cornerstone of national development, the Governor said the Commission remains “a vital agency of government, actually supposed to give us the raw material for development.” He emphasized that reliable population data is indispensable for effective planning, equitable resource allocation, and sustainable socio-economic growth across all tiers of government.
Congratulating the Commission’s leadership on their appointments, Governor Mutfwang stressed that the integrity of any census exercise must not be compromised.
“You have to be very, very meticulous and very detailed because one false piece of information can ruin many things,” he said, warning that inaccurate data could distort national planning and undermine development priorities.
He expressed confidence in the capacity of the current leadership to restore public trust in the census process, noting that “the credibility of a population census is what determines its acceptability.” He urged the Commission to ensure that the next enumeration aligns with international best practices.
Reflecting on his experience as a former local government chairman, the Governor raised concerns about persistent gaps in birth registration nationwide. "Up to now, I think we are still lagging behind in terms of birth registration,” he observed, adding that strengthening civil registration systems would improve identity management and reduce over-reliance on alternative documentation.
Governor Mutfwang also underscored the need for strong collaboration among federal, state, and local governments in achieving the NPC’s mandate.
“There is a need for synergy across all tiers of government to enable the Commission to succeed,” he said, assuring the NPC of Plateau State’s continuous support, including efforts to improve their working environment for more effective service delivery.
Earlier, the Director-General of the NPC, Aminu Yusuf, commended Governor Mutfwang for his administration’s achievements in restoring peace, improving infrastructure, strengthening healthcare delivery, and socio-economic development in Plateau State.
He called for sustained advocacy and institutional support for a fresh national census, noting that updated and reliable population data would enable governments to align investments with real needs and ensure equitable distribution of resources.
In recognition of his commitment to institutional strengthening and national development, the Commission conferred Governor Mutfwang with the status of Brand Ambassador of the National Population Commission.
