SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN JOS GATHERS MOMENTUM AS PLATEAU HOSTS NUGA GAMES
..…Governor Mutfwang Reaffirms Commitment to Boost Sports; Sponsors Stadium Fence, Tartan Track, and Pavilion Renovation
The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to sports development and youth empowerment as the state gets set to host the 27th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) at the University of Jos.
During an inspection visit to the J.T. Useni Stadium, one of the key venues for the forthcoming Games, Governor Mutfwang expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and pledged full government support to ensure a successful hosting of the national sporting fiesta.
“It is with great pride that we are here to witness the progress made in preparing for this historic event. It is an honour done to Plateau State, and from the onset, we resolved to lend a helping hand. We will do everything possible to make these Games a resounding success,” the Governor stated.
Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed that his administration would provide the needed logistics and security support to NUGA, assuring that the state government would work closely with relevant agencies to guarantee a safe and enabling environment for athletes, officials, and visitors.
“The issue of security is not one we will leave to the University alone. We will ensure maximum protection for all venues, athletes, and visitors. Our joy will be that everyone who comes to Plateau returns home safely as ambassadors of peace,” he added.
While commending the University authorities for their resilience despite funding challenges, the Governor emphasized the importance of maintaining the facilities beyond the Games. He directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to temporarily relocate his office to the Games Village to ensure effective coordination and sustained government presence throughout the event.
Earlier, the Acting Director of Physical Facilities, Arc. Pam Bot, briefed the Governor on the array of completed and ongoing projects, including the Tartan Track, multipurpose indoor sports hall, and the Taekwondo Hall donated by the South Korean Embassy. He commended the Plateau State Government for its strategic interventions, noting that the stadium fence, Tartan Track, and pavilion renovation were all government-sponsored projects.
Also speaking, Chairman of the University’s Sports Committee, Prof. Ishaya Pam, outlined some of the remaining challenges such as the completion of the hockey and cricket pitches, swimming pool, and accommodation logistics for the over 7,000 contingents expected at the Games.
Governor Mutfwang assured the University of continued partnership to address these gaps, reiterating that youth development, sports promotion, and peacebuilding remain central to his administration’s “Time Is Now” agenda.
