PLATEAU STATE GENDER COMMISSION ENGAGES WOMEN ELDERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST FEMALE DISINHERITANCE AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE/ CHILD TRAFFICKING

The Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission (PLASGEOC), under the leadership of its Chairperson, Barr. Olivia Dazyam, held a strategic engagement with women elders drawn from all zones of the state to discuss ongoing and future initiatives aimed at protecting the rights of citizens regardless of gender.

In her remarks, Barr. Dazyam expressed appreciation to the women leaders for honoring the Commission’s invitation and for their continued support. She highlighted some of the critical challenges the Commission is addressing, including child trafficking, gender-based violence, rape, and female disinheritance, among other social vices that threaten family and societal stability.

According to her, many victims of trafficking return home traumatized some with changed identities, others battling drug addiction, or resorting to prostitution due to abuse suffered at the hands of traffickers. She also noted that certain harmful cultural practices, such as denying women the right to inherit family property or preventing widows from inheriting their late husbands’ estates, continue to perpetuate inequality and injustice.

Barr. Dazyam further informed the gathering that the Commission, in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), is working on a Bill on Female Disinheritance, emphasizing NRC’s significant support in tackling issues affecting women and vulnerable groups across the state.
She called on the women elders whom she described as “respected mothers of the land” to use their influence and platforms to create awareness, sensitize their communities, and amplify advocacy efforts against these negative practices. She urged them to ensure that laws are enforced at all levels, regardless of the status of the perpetrators.

Responding, notable attendees, including Rtd. Justice Philemon Lot, Prof. Patricia Lar, Dr Sarah Ochekpe, former head of civik service of the state, Mrs. Hulda Fwangchi and Amina Adamu commended the Commission for its commitment to promoting gender equity on the Plateau. They acknowledged the challenges ahead but encouraged the Commission to remain steadfast in its mission.

They also pledged to support the fight against child trafficking and female disinheritance by engaging their communities through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and grassroots mobilization.
