PLATEAU STATE GENDER COMMISSION, NORWEGIAN REFUGEE COUNCIL ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN'S RIGHT TO INHERIT LAND AND PROPERTY

The Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), today hosted a stakeholders’ dialogue in Jos to spotlight women’s rights to inherit land and property.

The event brought together traditional leaders, community stakeholders, women’s groups, civil society actors, and the President of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO). Discussions centered on the persistent cultural practice that denies women, sometimes widows, the right to inherit family land and property leaving many economically vulnerable.
In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission stressed that property ownership is fundamental to women’s empowerment, dignity, and economic survival. She called for stronger enforcement of gender equality laws and community sensitization to bridge the gap between policy and practice.

The keynote addresses highlighted legal protections for women’s inheritance rights, while a panel discussion featuring legal experts, traditional leaders, and women advocates explored cultural barriers and practical solutions.

Traditional leaders present pledged to continue engaging their communities to review harmful practices, while the BECO President affirmed support for initiatives that promote fairness and equity. The NRC representative reiterated the Council’s commitment to advancing women’s rights, particularly for widows and displaced women.
