GOVERNOR MUTFWANG CALLS ON INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF N IGERIA (ICAN) TO SERVE AS CATALYST FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH
Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, (ICAN) have been urged to be more deliberate in their role as Professional Accountants that are drivers of economic growth and stability.
Governor Mutfwang gave the charge during a courtessy call by Officials of ICAN at Government House, Jos.
Addressing the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Plateau District, Mutfwng stated that his administration has placed premium in Transperency, Good Governance and Accounyability that is why the Office Commissioner of Finance is carefully appointed to a proffessional who happens to be an ICAN.
"I want to appreciate the fact that we have a vibrant district of ICAN on the plateau. I would want to urge you to be more deliberate and make yourselves more known I don't know where you are practising, some of you are in government but some of you in the private sector providing services".
" One of the things we are trying to do is to raise the profile of governance of the plateau and of course a key component of that would be accountability, financial accountability and transparency in the governance process. It is for that reason probably she hasn't told you that we have quietly instituted an audit process of government ministries, departments and agencies is an ongoing exercise. It's in phases and we hope that as we get along when we have properly institutionalised this practise there will be a lot of space for others to be able to come in and perform".
Mutfwang acknowledged that while many accountants work in various sectors of society, it was crucial for them to contribute more visibly to the state’s economic development and governance.
According to Governor Mutfwang;
"the call shouldn't stop at mere accountability,We must go beyond book keeping".
"Accounting is not just about numbers,it’s about applying those figures to fuel economic development and growth."
"I therefore understand the critical role of financial transparency, professional development, and strategic governance in shaping the future of Plateau State".
He advised them to colaborte with the State University Bokkos to ensure that accounting students graduate with globally recognized certifications, setting a new standard for the profession.
"It will be a proud moment when Plateau’s ICAN professionals are sought-after resource persons in national and international discussions,"
To this end, the goveror urged ICAN members to deepen their expertise, moving beyond comfort zones and tapping into global accounting practices to enhance their professionalism impact in financial transparency, holding government bodies accountable and creating room for more professional contributions.
Looking ahead, Mutfwang added, the government is also considering the creation of a unified Proffessional Space for various professions on the Plateau, addressing the current lack of dedicated offices.
"We are committed to providing a professional environment that will enhance the capacity and visibility of our accountants," he assured.
"We are laying the foundation for a strong and resilient economy in Plateau State. I am confident that with your expertise, we will achieve this goal".
Chairman Jos District Society of ICAN Tile Terhemba was delighted with the number of ICAN members in government and the State Civil Service.Appreciating the continious support of His Excellency.
The ICAN chairman assured Governor Mutfwang mazimum collaboration to achieve a viral economy.
