RWANG PAM TOWNSHIP STADIUM JOS TO WEAR A NEW LOOK AS CONTRACTOR INTENSIFY REMODELLING WORK
By Jimmy Pam Jerry PJ²
It is no longer news that the reconstruction work for the remodelling of the famous Rwang Pam Township Stadium in the heart of Jos city is moving well. Thanks to the visionary leadership of governor Caleb Mutfwang.
Recalled, the sports loving Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Mannaseh Mutfwang has awarded the contract for remodelling the Stadium to International Standard to a firm known as Reform Sports West Africa, with the key players in the sports circle on the Plateau fully involved, such as the new Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Musa Ashoms, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Nuhu Tampa, the energetic looking professor of sports & Director of Sports, Prof' Ezra Gunen.
The lead Architect of the project is Arch. John Ewule, with the target to remodel the stadium to category 2 standard with the following specifications;
✓ Replacing the natural turf with artificial turf (hybrid).
✓ Increase seating capacity
✓ Floodlights of 1000 lux, minimum
✓ Pitch size of 105m × 68m minimum
✓ Players and Referees' facilities with
✓ Adequate changing rooms, showers and medical facilities
✓ Media facilities
✓ To ensure compliance with FIFA safety and security regulations
To achieve the above standard, the Weightlifting, Wrestling and Judo Gyms beside the stadium will be reconstructed into a stairs building. The ground floor will accommodate the changing rooms, medicals and lounge, as the Gym will be relocated upstairs.
The seating capacity of the stadium will be increased from the present 4,000 to 5,000 capacity if only a 5 lane tartan track will be laid. But to raise the seating capacity to 10,000, will mean the entire running tracks may give way just like what is obtained in most of the European football pitches, though this decision is still being contemplated. But in my own view as a professional/consultant in sports, I would suggest that let there be provision for the 5 lane tartan track inorder to accommodate other sport events like the track and field events for youths, veterans, underaged and also the physical training exercise of football referees on the track during fitness test and keep fit exercises mostly done on the track.
The V.I.P stand will also take a new shape as the roof cover will be extended on both sides with convenience rooms to be constructed behind the V.I.P for both the VIP's and VVIP's (Governor/President) with kitchen and Media box on the flanks. No need for the VIP's to go outside the stand for convenience, while the stand will be carpeted and furnished with durable all-weather luxury seats.
The metal barricade used as perimeter fencing preventing spectators from encroaching the football pitch will be reduced to chest level height to meet international standards.
Football pundits on the Plateau have expressed concern as to why the remodelling of Rwang Pam Township stadium instead of completing the new Jos stadium at Zaria road, not knowing that CAF and Fifa standard is against the use of uncompleted structure as league venue posing danger to players and spectators as well. Moreover, the synthetic turf at the Zaria road stadium is due for change. Recalled, since the administration of His Excellency, Da senator Jonah David Jang resumed work at the abandoned Zaria road stadium taking it to more than 50% completion, the immediate past administration did not build on what they met, instead some facilities have been vandalized and over stretched, taking the whole project backwards with high Capital intensive.
It is great wisdom for the current government to concentrate on the reconstruction/remodeling work at Rwang Pam Township stadium, allowing our darling teams, Plateau united FC and Mighty Jets international to finish their 2024/2025 NPFL & NNL season on the Zaria road pitch while they move to Rwang Pam Township stadium after completion of the remodelling, with a possibility of resuming work fully on the Zaria road stadium.
God's willing, Plateau united FC and Mighty Jets int'l FC will play the 2025/2026 NPFL season at the Rwang Pam Township stadium, Jos.
This project is a confirmation of Governor Caleb Mutfwang's initiative of bringing back the glory days of Sports on the Plateau.
The Time is NOW!
